AWC Antwerp often receives emails of thanks and appreciation from breast cancer patients and family members for the heart-shaped pillow that they are given during their stay in the hospital. 

The doctors and nurses working in the various breast care teams are equally thankful for the support provided by the pillows and the lounges.  

Both heart-shaped pillows and breast care lounges are wonderful additions to the support and care of the breast cancer patients during their treatment.

For many people, the diagnosis of breast cancer comes as a huge shock.

Suddenly your whole life is turned upside down. A surgical procedure must be performed, usually breast conserving, sometimes more drastic.

During their admission, patients are cared for by our breast care nurses in our very cozy Breast Care Lounge. Patients feel a little more at home in this oasis of peace, the hospital atmosphere less visible for a while. 

The fitting of breast prostheses is done here in an atmosphere of complete intimacy and serenity. Patients also are given a Caring Hearts heart-shaped pillow which helps to alleviate discomfort after breast cancer surgery.

Plots staat heel je leven op z'n kop. 

Er dient een operatieve ingreep te gebeuren. Meestal borstsparend, soms meer ingrijpend.

Tijdens hun opname worden patiënten door onze borstverpleegkundigen opgevangen in onze heel knus ingerichte Borstlounge. In deze oase van rust voelen patiënten zich iets meer thuis. Het ziekenhuis is dan even weg.

Het aanpassen van eventuele borstprothesen gebeurt hier in alle intimiteit en sereniteit. Hier krijgt elke patiënte tevens een hartvormig kussentje aangeboden. Deze helpt de hinder na okselchirurgie te verzachten.

As a doctor, it is extremely good to see that our breast cancer patients have a place in their department where they can 'escape' from the hospital for a period of time while recovering from their operation. 

Since 2011, the Breast Care lounge has offered patients the opportunity to relax in an atypical setting and talk to breast care nurses, psychologists and doctors. Because of the setting, with the colors and furnishings, it does not evoke a hospital feeling, and patients are therefore more inclined to raise non-medical problems, which certainly benefits the processing of the entire disease process.

Practical matters are discussed with patients in the breast lounge (fitting prostheses, etc.). The breast care nurses also use the room for planning, and patients also have very easy access to it. The door is literally almost always open, making it very easy for patients to speak to 'their' breast care nurse or simply forget that they are in the hospital while sitting in a comfortable chair with a nice cup of coffee.

Many patients know that the Breast Care lounge was created by a group of volunteers who engage in regular activities to alleviate discomfort during breast cancer treatment. Knowing that people are committed to patients gives the feeling of not being alone. 

During the daily patient rounds, it also gives me a warm feeling to see patients clinging tightly to their heart-shaped pillows - the ideal support - colorful, comfortable and above all heart-warming!

Als arts is het buitengewoon goed om te zien dat onze kankerpatiënten een plek hebben op hun afdeling waar ze tijdens het herstel van hun operatie toch even kunnen ‘ontsnappen’ aan het ziekenhuis. Al sinds 2011 biedt de borstlounge aan patiënten de mogelijkheid om in een atypische setting even tot rust te komen en te praten met de borstverpleegkundigen, psychologen en artsen. Juist doordat de setting, met de kleuren en de inrichting, geen ziekenhuisgevoel oproept, zijn patiënten ook meer geneigd om niet medische problemen aan te kaarten wat de verwerking van het hele ziekteproces zeker ten goede komt. 

In de borstlounge worden ook veel praktische zaken aan de patiënten aangeleerd (aanpassen prothesen etc.). De borstverpleegkundigen zijn heel vaak met voorbereidend werk bezig in de borstlounge en patiënten hebben hier ook een heel vlotte toegang. De deur staat letterlijk bijna altijd open, waardoor de drempel zeer laag is voor patienten om ‘hun’ borstverpleegster aan te spreken of gewoon even te vergeten dat ze in het ziekenhuis zijn in een zetel met een lekkere kop koffie.

Veel patiënten weten ook dat de borstlounge er gekomen is door een groep mensen die zich dagelijks inzetten om de ongemakken tijdens de behandeling voor borstkanker te verlichten. Weten dat mensen zich voor jou engageren geeft ook het gevoel dat zij er niet alleen voorstaan. Bij de dagelijkse patiëntenronde geeft het ook mij een warm gevoel om patiënten te zien die zich stevig vastklampen aan hun hartvormig kussen – de ideale steun – kleurig, comfortabel en vooral hart-verwarmend!

Breast cancer – a word that turns your life upside down. What about all those plans you had, trips and projects, grandchildren? The ground falls out from beneath your feet?  

Doctors make decisions regarding your treatment, but you have to undergo this yourself. Suddenly you are no longer in control of your life. You are overwhelmed by a lot of sadness and fear, but above all there are so many questions. How do I tell my children – how do we deal with this as a family, as a couple? Will I have to wear a wig and what about a breast prosthesis?

An entire team - doctors, nurses, psychologist, physiotherapist and dieticians – is  ready to assist you and guide you through this difficult period.

Surrounded by colorful cushions in the shape of a heart, and with the support of the American Women's Club of Antwerp, a space, the breast care lounge, has been provided in the GZA Breast Clinic where our breast cancer team can meet with patients in peace and quiet. to talk and listen to those many questions and fears.

Borstkanker – een woord dat je leven op zijn kop zet. Wat met al die plannen die je had, reizen en projecten , kleinkinderen?  De grond wordt onder je voeten weggemaaid . Artsen nemen beslissingen betreffende je behandeling maar zelf moet je dit ondergaan. Plots heb je je leven niet meer in de hand. Je wordt overspoeld door veel verdriet en angst maar vooral zijn er zoveel vragen. Hoe vertel ik het aan mijn kinderen – hoe gaan we hier als gezin, als koppel mee om? Zal ik een pruik moeten dragen en hoe zit dat met een borstprothese?

Een gans team van artsen, verpleegkundigen, psycholoog, kinesist en diëtist staat klaar om je bij te staan en je doorheen deze moeilijke periode te loodsen.

Omringd door kleurige kussentjes in de vorm van een hart is er dank zij de steun van de American Women’s Club of Antwerp in de borstkliniek van GZA een ruimte, de borst lounge, voorzien waar onze borst verpleegkundige of de psycholoog in alle rust tijd kan maken om te praten en te luisteren naar die vele vragen en angsten.

Dank je wel AWCA, dank je wel Carol, voor de support die wij als team krijgen om op die manier onze patiënten en hun familie nog beter te begeleiden, want borstkanker krijg je nooit alleen.
